I was born on June 26, 2003 in Powhatan County. My mother’s name was Hope and my Dad was called Lug. I spent my first few weeks sleeping with my brothers and sisters, and eating as often as mother would feed us.
One day a tall man showed up looking for a puppy. Now every dog knows that no human is just looking to buy a puppy. No one really is just looking for something new to do with old newspapers. Humans are really looking for something else. What this man was looking for I don’t know, but he got a bargain when he got me.
He began to call me Luke, short for my AKC name Chastain’s Good Luke Charm. He tells people that's the name of a character in the book from Pat Conroy’s Prince of Tides because I think he wants people to think he reads a lot. But I really believe it was because Luke in the Bible was a doctor, and I think the tall man needed some healing when he bought me.
Soon I went to puppy class, and then kindergarten obedience class, and then I got to go to Ms. Hoffman’s Heron Hawk Kennels for grown-up retriever training. Ms. Hoffman taught me a lot and thought I had real potential to be a good field trialer, but that would mean I would have to spend most of my time in training and away from the man who bought me. I could tell early on he was going to have separation anxieties, so I gave up a chance to bring home a lot of ribbons and instead look after Ol’ Jones.
My hobbies include being a “picker up” at pheasant shoots, hunting with Ol’ Jones, swimming, writing, working on my web site, and modeling for dog calendars.
Follow me and I'll show you my family tree...
